Robbie Dias has worked at Diamond Ranch for the past 9 years. His experience starting from the ground up has given him an edge in creating a competitive and motivating athletic department. Robbie began working in a nighttime staff position while he was attending and playing football at Dixie State College. He quickly moved from night staff to assistant program director, to Athletic Director. He has been in that position since 2005.

Since his advancement, DRAs’ clubs, activities, and athletic program have rapidly grown to an accredited 1A school. This accreditation has made it possible for both our boy and girl students to compete in athletics such as football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.

In addition to the mainstream athletics, students are involved in cheerleading, music, art, fishing and many more. Robbie loves the athletic piece of his job the most. He enjoys watching the students compete in the various sports. Some students often times would not have the opportunity in their home schools to compete at this level. He has seen the students compete and win and gain all they can from sports.

Robbie’s yellow/blue personality is a perfect fit for his position. His personal motive in life is to have fun! He connects with the students by helping them enjoy their lives through clubs and activities. His blue helps him build solid relationships with the students and staff.

On a personal note…Robbie was born in Alabama but spent most of his life in St. George, Utah. He played football in high school and college. He served an LDS mission in Brazil. Robbie met his wife Carly while attending college. They have three awesome kids, Skye, Davyn, and Raider, and reside in Hurricane, Utah.

Tim and Haley Stroshine

Often times at Diamond Ranch Academy we get a husband and wife team that together and individually add so much to the family atmosphere DRA has tried to capture. Haley and Tim Stroshine both work at DRA but in different arenas.

Haley Stroshine is an Administrative Assistant. She has the opportunity to meet and interact with the parents when they come to DRA for visits. Haley said it always brings a smile to her face when parents see first-hand the change their child has made in just a few short months. She feels there is nothing better than being a part of a team that helps change lives for the better.

Haley’s blue/white personality helps her feel compassion toward the students and families she meets. Her white helps her to think logically and be calm and patient in stressful situations. Haley’s past job and educational background has given her the experience to manage efficiently. She was a manager at a food storage company call Shelf Reliance, attended the University of Utah, BYU-Idaho and a semester at Utah Valley University pursuing an exercise science degree, in hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

Haley loves the outdoors, whether it’s playing soccer, running, camping, and hiking, or fishing. She loves watching football (including our own DRA football team)! She enjoys cooking and trying new recipes but most of all she loves spending time with her husband Tim.

Speaking of Tim… Tim Stroshine is part of DRA’s Youth Development Staff. He is actively pursing a degree in biology at Dixie State College with the hopes of being accepted to medical school in the fall of 2014. Tim is very much looking forward to becoming a doctor. He would love to be and anesthesiologist and work in the operating room. He also has a passion to eventually go to third world countries and help those less fortunate with their medical issues.

Tim is a full time student during the week and spends his weekends at DRA. His “big blue” personality helps him with his job because he is motivated to help the students through his overactive compassion. His blue makes him a perfectionist, which helps him to see the small things before they become big issues.

Tim receives the most satisfaction from seeing a young man finally understand the purpose for being at DRA, and allows the program to help him. Tim also feels the benefit from therapist training he receives. It helps him understand more about the issues our students deal with, and how his position can support their success.

Outside of work and school, Tim loves to play golf. He, like his wife, enjoys the outdoors and loves to camp and hike. Most of his time is spent with his family. Tim comes from a large family of 8 with five brothers and two sisters. There is always something going on.

Maurie Simons

Our Admissions Counselor – Maurie Simons – is recognized by Diamond Ranch Academy as an incredibly, wonderful, person. She has been with DRA for seven years. Most of those years have been with a phone to her ear. She works with parents when they are considering DRA as a school choice. Maurie said the most rewarding part of her job is introducing parents to DRA in the beginning and witnessing their struggle to make this difficult decision, to the happiness they experience when their child has found success at the end of the program.

Maurie is a blue/yellow on the color code. She said her blue helps her connect emotionally with parents, and her yellow helps her to love all kinds of people. Maurie is a practical joker. She enjoys life to its fullest. She has six children and one granddaughter, and gets the most satisfaction spending time with them. They enjoy movies, vacations by the ocean, and amusement parks. She is anxiously anticipating her new grandson in December.

Maurie said she “loves, loves, loves, her job”. She loves the parents, students, and staff at DRA. Each person is an integral part of DRA, but Maurie is the one of the first contacts at the school. She has an important role here and it does not go unnoticed. Her hard work and dedication has laid the foundation for the success of Diamond Ranch Academy.

Awesome Team, Dan and Stari Borchardt

Dan Borchardt is an integral part of the Diamond Ranch Academy Team. He is on our Admissions crew as the Admissions Coordinator. His educational background and experience at Diamond Ranch have been instrumental in helping our program succeed.

Dan grew up a Florida boy, who wrestled alligators, surfed, scuba dived, fished, and soaked up the tropical sun. He had no thoughts in his mind to move to the hot desert. After meeting Ricky Dias while serving an LDS mission in Poland, he decided to give it a try. Ricky introduced him to Diamond Ranch Academy and also to Ricky’s little sister, Stari. Dan fell in love with both and firmly set his foot in the red dirt of Hurricane, Utah. He married Stari, and they have two beautiful boys, named, Ryan, and Titan.

While pursuing his education, Dan has had experience as one of our youth development staff, as well as the Observation and Assessment Supervisor (O&A), where Shane Johnson currently works. He completed his Bachelors degree in business and is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration from Southern Utah University. He believes that knowledge is power.

Dan is a red/blue personality, which helps him stay objective in his position, while also working hard. He is trying to constantly better himself, create lasting personal relationships with the DRA staff and his family. He feels DRA has a great program and plans on staying with us to help it grow and progress.

In his spare time, Dan loves the outdoors, including, camping, fishing, and all types of water sports. He also enjoys fixing cars. Dan is a hard worker with the best of Diamond Ranch in mind.

On to Dan's better half!

The style, look, and flare of the students at Diamond Ranch Academy are originated from our in house hairstylist ….Stari Borchardt! One of the first experiences students receive when coming to Diamond Ranch Academy is a supreme hair cut from Stari. She said that some hair cuts are more welcome than others. Her white/blue personality really helps in the “not so willing” customers. Stari has a way to remain calm and collected during stressful situations. She does not get upset or intimidated, simply acts professional and continues to do her magic. Each student looks very well groomed and clean cut when they leave her chair. She also owns her own business called “Stari Style”, where other stylists can rent space from her to do hair.

Her latest “Stari Stylings” were seen on the cheerleading squad at the last DRA game against Duchene High School. She took the time to curl and style each of the girls’ hair. They looked so amazing!

Stari is married to Dan Borchardt who is also one of the first faces parents and students see when considering DRA as a school choice. Together Stari and Dan have two beautiful boys and just found out they are expecting another one this coming spring. Stari said her first priority in her life is her boys. She loves being a mother and is very hands on, she loves playing any sport with her boys.

Stari was a star soccer player at Dixie State College. She is quick and skillful. She loves to spend time with her husband riding motorcycles, or just having fun.

It takes all types of skill sets to make Diamond Ranch Academy the great place that it has become. Thanks Stari!

Taunie Carter

Taunie Carter has worked for Diamond Ranch Academy on and off since 2007. Her greatest perk of the job is learning great life skills. Taunie is a C-Shift Supervisor over the girl’s campus. She absolutely loves working with our students and feels the skill set she is gaining from her job is helping her with not only her work, but her family life as well.

Off the job site, Taunie is a mother to a cute little two year old named, Khole. Taunie has had extra work from home the past three months as her husband of 4 ½ years, is serving in the military. He is attending “Major” training in Georgia and will be there until March 2012.

Taunie is a red personality, which helps her to accomplish things and keep a logical perspective, especially managing her time while her husband is away. She has a real presence to be a leader. Taunie has put herself through school and received training from Taylor Andrew’s School of Hair. Brigham said he has learned more about himself and about people in general, while working at DRA, than he has in the 10 years before working at the ranch.
Brigham loves to help the students grow and to see the changes they can make not only with themselves, but with their family and friends. Brigham feels like working at DRA is similar to being a part of a family. He really enjoys the people he works with.

Brigham has completed two years of college and is currently working toward his Bachelors in Business management. He has been here since its inception. He has witnessed first hand the growth and progress DRA has made in just 10 years. We have grown from 20 students to now averaging over 150, and have become a well known, progressive, campus. It is Bo’s hope to be with DRA to see the same type of growth and success within 10 more years. Bo is encouraged with the character of DRA’s program and education, he can see when the students begin to value themselves, they also begin to value their education.

Bo is a Southern Utah native. He graduated from Pineview High School, attained his Associates degree from Dixie State College, his Bachelors, and his Master in Education Leadership from Southern Utah University. He is currently on the Accreditation Committee for the state of Utah office of education. Bo said, “What stands out about DRA are the employees. The school is only as good as the people who work there.” He said DRA has good people working with the students for a great cause.

One of Bo’s passions is baseball. He said, “I am head coach for DRA’s baseball team when they win, and only the assistant when they lose.” He loves taking his 9 year old son to the games. He coaches his son’s team as well. Bo’s other passion is his family. He has been married for almost 11 years and has two kids, a 9 year old son and 7 year old daughter. What a worker we have. She has been at Diamond Ranch Academy for 10 months and has enjoyed her time here. Brooke came here at the same time two of our students were admitted. She has been able to work with them from the beginning and will see them graduate. Brooke said that is the most rewarding part of her job. She is glad to have the opportunity to work at Diamond Ranch Academy and has learned some great life skills while being here.

Brooke is currently attending Dixie State College full time, studying Chemistry. She is planning on pursuing a medical degree from the University of Utah, in hopes of becoming a doctor. Brooke also has her cosmetologist’s license, so she will not only be able to tell you what is wrong with your insides, she will help you look great on the outside.

Brooke is from Cedar City, Utah. Her hobbies are reading, playing violin, outdoors, hiking, swimming, boating, and snowboarding. She has a unique love of eating lemons with salt on them.

Brooke is a part of our HYDS staff who says she loves to work. What a great person to have at Diamond Ranch Academy!

Brooke’s supervisor made the following comments:

Brooke is very motivated in everything that she does. She is a hard worker and is always willing to take on extra responsibilities. Her great work ethic shows by the way she looks for ways to improve what we do and puts in the extra time to make it a reality. She works very well with the students and is able to hold them accountable. Diamond Ranch is lucky to have Brooke as an employee and we have definitely benefited from her hard work and dedication.

Ephraim Hanks

Not many save our students at Diamond Ranch Academy and a few others have heard the music styling’s of our very own Clinical Director, Ephraim Hanks. In the 1980’s Ephraim sported a mullet, sang in a band, and played the guitar. Today, although his hair is a little more reserved, he still loves all kinds of big hair 80’s bands and continues to write his own music, sing, and play the guitar.

Ephraim was born in Hawaii, where his father was an Institute instructor at the University of Hawaii. His family later moved to Pleasant Grove, and eventually Hurricane, Utah, where he attended high school. Ephraim served an LDS mission to Sydney, Australia. Upon his return home he pursued a Bachelors degree at Utah Valley University in Psychology. He was employed at the Provo Canyon Boys School for six years as a front line staff. He has had hands on experience with struggling teens, and is completed invested in the students. He met his wife Megan while living in Provo. Together they have three cute little boys.

Ephraim and his wife moved to the University of Louisville to obtain a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. Ephraim’s first career job was as a school counselor at a Catholic school in Louisville. He also had his own private practice. Ephraim’s move back west brought him to Diamond Ranch Academy; he has been here since 2006. He is a white/blue personality. Ephraim is calm, level headed, and really takes things in stride. He is devoted to the students and their successes. He loves them and enjoys working at Diamond Ranch Academy. Ephraim first love is working with people, his second, is eating meat. Doug started out teaching, moved to retail for years, then back to teaching. He feels he has a real knack for teaching and motivating students. He feels working at Diamond He loves to hunt, and fish. He has a caribou hanging on the wall of his home and said his wife actually likes it. He has had the opportunity to hunt Russian Boar and collects all types of guns, ammunition, rifles, and pistols.

Doug and his son were fishing halibut in Alaska and found that no matter what boat his group was on, they were the most successful out of the group. One day he was eating a banana on the boat and the captain grabbed the banana, chucked it out of the boat and told Doug that bananas were bad luck on a fishing trip. It was hard to believe so Doug and his sons made a joke out it. They left a case of bananas on the boat for a practical joke, only to find the next morning after a huge storm, all the other fishing boats were fine, but the one with the case of bananas on it was lifted 50 feet out of the water and on to the shore. When the captain found out about this, he followed Doug and company all the way to the airport. Doug has had many laughs about this incident.

We are fortunate to have Doug as one of our teachers and find his humor, and life’s experiences really help our students at Diamond his qualities help him to understand where the “white” students are coming from and he feels he is great at handing challenging students. He feels that working at Diamond Ranch Academy brings a new challenge every day. Even if the job is the same, each day brings about a new situation which helps him gain an all round perspective.

Joe grew up in St. George, Utah. He said he didn’t do much with his life until he met his beautiful wife Jen, which helped him “step up”. Joe loves to play games, go to movies, camp, and hike. He especially loves bike riding with his wife. Joe met his wife Jen through some mutual friends. They’ve known each other for three years and have been married for a year and a half. They are trying together to make the perfect pizza. Eventually they would like to open up a pizza parlor together because they love people, love cooking, and love pizza!

Joe’s supervisor, Travis Bentley had the following comments:

I've just recently transitioned back to nights, and haven't supervised Joe for very long. However, in that short amount of time I've been very impressed with Joe. He works very well with the youth he is supervising and is very professional. Probably the best compliment I could give Joe is that I never have to worry about what is going on in Joe's dorm. He always has things under control and the kids enjoy being in his family. Joe is a hard worker and is constantly improving himself as a Head Youth Development Staff. We are very fortunate to have Joe as an employee at Diamond Ranch.

Jen Demke has worked for Diamond Ranch Academy before as a homeless staff. She came to us fresh out of college from Brigham Young University/Idaho with a Bachelors degree in Communications. She felt working with the students would be a great career. Jen took some time off and found that she missed working with our students, and later returned to work on the girl’s campus. She enjoys Diamond Ranch Academy and the way they help them make better choices, and show them a better way to live. Jen loves to see the transition in students that come to Diamond Ranch Academy and being a part of transition. She said, “It helps her to be a better person.”

Jen is a blue/white personality. She has compassion while understanding the meaning of tough love and her blue helps her understand the big picture. She loves cooking, bike riding, and photography. She is the kind of person who loves adventure and rediscovering old adventures. Opening a pizza parlor with her husband Joe, might be a new adventure, and also an old adventure as they continue to try to achieve the “perfect pizza”. Look out for the Demke’s, Pizza Hut!

Jen’s supervisor had the following comments:

Jen is very passionate about her work. She is always looking for ways that she can improve and takes advice very well. She truly cares about the girls and the progress that they are making. She wants to help these girls make changes so they can have healthy lives.

Shane Johnson Employee Spotlight!

Shane Johnson is our Observation and Assessment Supervisor here at Diamond Ranch Academy. He is one of the first people parents and students interact with when a student enters DRA. He is in charge of parent communication and intake staff. His six years of experience at DRA is essential for his job. His blue/red personality gives him the confidence, and commitment to follow through with tough situations and assignments. His blue definitely helps him appreciate the change he sees in the students from when they enter O&A to when they leave.

His favorite thing about working at Diamond Ranch Academy is seeing the program actually work. DRA’s motto “Healing families on youth at a time” is really working. DRA’s goal is to change the world, one family at a time. Shane feels that DRA offers the proper tools necessary to actually accomplish this goal.

Shane is a father of 5 children and has tried to use the standards and tools he has learned at Diamond Ranch in his own family. He says that family is where it’s at. His best time is spent with his kids outdoors doing all sorts of fun activities. He enjoys working on motorcycles, snowboarding, fishing, camping and target shooting. He is a local boy, and has lived most of his life in the Southern Utah area and loves being here. He spent some time living in California as well. Shane is a hard worker and greatly appreciated for his experience and compassion he shows the staff and students at Diamond Ranch Academy.

We are pleased to have Shane as part of the Diamond Ranch team. Shane and I go way back to the good ol’ days of Hurricane where we attended High School together. Shane is dependable and puts his whole heart into helping the youth he works with. The students come to appreciate Shane’s empathy and understanding as he guides them through one of the most challenging components of the program.

Caleb Steele

Caleb Steele is a therapist here at Diamond Ranch Academy. He has been at the ranch for almost two years. You can tell it is Caleb coming up that good old dirt road in a distinguishable 1972 orange GMC Jimmy. On the outside it looks like a piece of junk, but in Caleb’s eyes it is as nice as a Rolls Royce.

Caleb loves living in a small town such as Hurricane. He is used to the slower pace and small town feel. He grew up on Middleton Idaho. He didn’t take much time in outside of school to pursue hobbies, from the time he was a freshman in high school until his senior year he worked as a butcher at the local marked called Starmerc. From high school he went on to serve an LDS mission to Melbourne Australia, and served in Tasmania as well. While he was in Australia, a beautiful girl named Stephanie and her family moved next door to Caleb’s family. Caleb went on his first date with his new next door neighbor and eventually married her. They now have 2 ½ kids, one boy and one girl, and expecting another girl in 5 months.

Caleb attended Brigham Young University/Idaho where he received his Bachelors Degree in Psychology. He pursued his master’s degree at the University of Utah in Social Work. His first job out of school is here at Diamond Ranch Academy. Caleb loves it here. He loves his fellow employees, and enjoys working with the students. Caleb eventually would like to complete a PhD and teach at a college. He is a white/blue personality. He loves to play basketball and work out at the gym. Caleb is an excellent therapist and fits well into the Diamond Ranch Academy family.

Caleb’s supervisor made the following comments:

Caleb is an exceptional therapist and employee and provides much needed comic relief to the Clinical Department. Caleb is a dedicated therapist and is well liked by his students and co-workers. Caleb’s easy going personality and friendly nature allow him to connect with people easily and form trusting relationships. Caleb is a real asset to the clinical team.

Stuart Squires

Stuart Squires is one of our great therapists at Diamond Ranch Academy. He has been with us for 4 years. He took a brief sabbatical to live near his family in American Fork, but realized his true place was with Diamond Ranch Academy in Southern, Utah. Stuart has a Master’s in Social Work from Brigham Young University, he mentioned Nike has tried to endorse him for years but he was not ready to sign with them, he is waiting to hear back from Coca-Cola.

Some of his areas of expertise are working with traumatized children, substance abuse, and mood disorders. Stuart really enjoys working with the youth in the program. He enjoys learning about their lives and getting to know them. He also enjoys working with the clinical team. There is always a good laugh or two when the team gets together. Stuart has a lot of yellow and white in his personality color scheme. He enjoys having a lot of fun but also try’s to keep it under control.

Stuart has published a few articles with some of his college professors in noted journals. He received a few awards in High School. The most noted were the prom king and an all-state athlete.

Stuart was born in Denver, Colorado. He has lived a majority of my life in American Fork, Utah, and comes from a family 10. He has 6 sisters and 3 brothers. Stuart has been married for almost 10 years now and has 5 children. They just recently had their 5th child, a little girl.

Stuart enjoys all sports, especially football and basketball. His favorite thing to do around this time is to go blackpowder hunting for deer. He also enjoys fishing and camping with his 4 boys.

Stuart’s supervisor made the following comments:

Stuart is a wonderful therapist and connects easily with his students. He has a great sense of humor and keeps things lively in the clinical department. We are lucky to have Stuart with us.

-Ephraim

Mckel Abbott Spotlight

Mckel is part of Diamond Ranch Academy’s Youth Development Staff. She is a supervisor and has started Diamond Ranch Academy’s first cheerleading squad. She has loved this aspect of her job. When Mckel first started working with Diamond Ranch Academy’s girls, some of them knew nothing about cheerleading. After one month of good hard practice, the girls were able to cheer and do routines well enough to perform at the Diamond Ranch Academy football games. Mckel loves being a mentor and cheerleading coach to our students.

Mckel is a white/yellow personality. She said while working at Diamond Ranch Academy she uses her yellow to have fun with the students and can be laid back. She said she is so white that in order to keep the students structured she has to fake a red personality at times.

Mckel grew up in Hurricane and ran track and played soccer in high school. She does NOT like vegetables and her favorite treat is Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream. (It sounds like she is a health nut as well). Mckel has one very cute son named Koen, whom she loves to squeeze and hug during her time off.

Mckel loves working with the Diamond Ranch Academy students and hopes to continue this line of work in the future. Her supervisor made the following comments about Mckel: Mckel has been employed with Diamond Ranch for over a year. Since she is a white personality she is very calm in all situations and is able to be objective when dealing with issues. She loves her job and being able to see the changes in the students. She is always willing to put in extra time to make sure that the girl’s campus is running smooth. She takes the extra time to talk to the students and help them understand what changes they need to make in order to be successful. Diamond Ranch is lucky to have Mckel working with the youth.

Diamond Ranch Academy Equine Specialist Spotlight

Gary Ferguson is a good ol’ Lehi Pioneer. He grew up a true cowboy and can even do what the students at Diamond Ranch Academy call, “The Cowboy Shuffle”. Gary will challenge our students to a foot race and he can speed walk (shuffle) faster than the students can run. Gary said he has enjoyed his job at Diamond Ranch Academy more than he has any other job.

Gary is Diamond Ranch Academy’s career’s teacher and equine specialist. Gary has two Bachelors degrees from Utah State University, one in Agribusiness, and one in general business, and two associates degrees; one in animal science, the other in beef production management. He has worked most of his life as a rancher on big ranches in Florida and in Nebraska. He is also skilled as a machinist. He loves to train horses and loves feeding and caring for the horses at Diamond Ranch Academy. Gary has a blue/white personality. He is very quiet, gentle and a hard worker. He quietly goes about his business, doing his job, and enjoys the students thoroughly. His reserved nature has kept him from being very adventurous, however his son just recently talked him into going zip lining. Gary loved it and was glad to spend the time with his son who just entered the Missionary Training Center to serve a two year LDS mission. Gary is very talented with his hands. He builds beautiful furniture and homes. One of his hobbies is remodeling homes and building frames for his wife’s art business.

Gary is a true outdoorsman. He never thought he would like the desert landscape of Southern Utah after living in various parts of the United States, and has been surprised how much he does enjoy it here. We are glad he loves it, because Gary has helped our equine therapy program grow and is a great asset here.

Gary’s supervisor Ephraim Hanks, made the following comments:

Gary is an integral part of the clinical team. He is dedicated and loyal and works hard to keep our Equine Program in top shape. The students love him and the horses have nothing but positive things to say! Thanks Gary for your hard work and dedication.

Reeve Knighton Spotlight

Reeve Knighton is one of Diamond Ranch Academy’s veterans. He has been one of our core teachers for almost six years. He was raised in Leeds, Utah, and has stayed living in Southern Utah his whole life. He attended Dixie College and Southern Utah University to earn a Bachelors degree in teaching. He eventually completed his Master’s degree in Education Leadership. Reeve has certainly shown his educational leadership at Diamond Ranch Academy.

Reeve is a white/blue on the color code, but has equal amounts of yellow and red. What an all round guy! When working with the students, Reeve is very calm, he doesn’t get ruffled easily, he know how to joke, he is friendly and open, yet he can set boundaries, and smile while he is writing a citation. Reeve is very meticulous and does things a certain way, and extremely thorough. We found a very good man in Reeve and have benefited from his great work.

On his day off Reeve has spent most of his time working on his new home in Washington, Utah. He is married with 3 boys and 1 girl. They keep him pretty busy. He likes to relax and read books. He treasures his alone time when he can get it and enjoys sketching and doodling.

Reeve hopes to see Diamond Ranch Academy grow and expand its capabilities, so he can grow right along with them. He wants to excel as an educational leader and is hoping Diamond Ranch will continue to be the place where he can.

Reeve’s supervisor had the following comments: Reeve Knighton is a one of a kind individual. Reeve originally started at DRA as a our History Teacher. It we was quickly recognized that he had a gift for reaching students that had unique academic challenges. Reeve took on additional education and obtained his licensure in Special Education and has become an integral part of the Special Education services provided by DRA. Reeve always talks about his students with true interest and compassion as he strives to make a difference with the students that he works with. Reeve is on a continual quest for excellence in both his professional and personal life. I can say that I am a better person for knowing Reeve and it has been my priviledge to work side by side him for the last several years.

Employee Spotlight Cory Sutton

Cory Sutton is a Medical Technician at Diamond Ranch Academy. He brings with him much experience working with struggling teens. Cory has degrees in Massage Therapy and an Associates Degree from Dixie State College.

Cory loves Diamond Ranch Academy and helping people make positive changes in their lives. This has prompted him to work with youth and to become a therapist. Most of his life revolves around school and work. In between these two he tries to spend as much time with his wife and boys as he can. He loves to go camping and take in a good movie when time permits. (The love of camping seems to be a common interest among our staff, maybe that’s why they like our campus setting.)

Cory’s supervisor had the following comments: Is this a brother-sister act?
When the Medical Department was looking for a new med tech, Melissa casually mentioned that her brother had been employed in a residential treatment program for the past six years, and was ready to move on. As it turned out, this 6’6” father of 4 fit the bill perfectly! Cory has recently graduated with honors from Dixie with an A.S. degree, and is continuing on with what used to be referred to as a “double major” in communications and psychology. She was hired last July as an Administrative Assistant for the Clinical team and has proven her worth. She came to us fresh out of school. Jessica attended Southern Utah University where she obtained a Bachelors degree in Psychology. There she graduated Suma Cum Laude and was voted the outstanding scholar among her peers. Jessica put herself through school and was employed at SkyWest during that time Jessica also attended Dixie State College for her Associates degree. She is a native to Southern Utah. She grew up in St George and attended Pine View High School.

Jessica is a Blue/White on the color code. She has absolutely no red or yellow in her. We know she laughs and jokes, but her very first priority is to do the best job possible for Diamond Ranch Academy and specifically the Clinical department. Her job is one where she needs to be very detailed oriented and self motivated. Jessica has proven to not only get her job done, but to go the extra mile. Her blue allows her to be conscience of her daily tasks and committed to her work while her white permits her to have a compassionate heart and kindness for the students.

Jessica loves working at Diamond Ranch Academy. She loves her Clinical team and thinks everyone is funny and easy to work with. They really make her feel a part of the group. She loves the parents, students, and especially her work. It shows in a person’s performance how much they enjoy their work, and for how much time and commitment we get from Jessica, she must really love her job.

Jessica is married to Jeff Clark. They have been married for 5 years and are the proud parents of two dogs, Denver and Cheyenne. Jessica loves to hang out with her husband and her family. She plays golf, loves to read, shop, and work around her house. She is a really picky eater, which, if you know her, is not surprising, but we can get her to eat chicken.

Ephraim Hanks had the following supervisor comments to make about Jessica:
Jessica is the glue that holds the Clinical Department together. We are so lucky to have her. She is consistent, reliable, and thorough in her responsibilities and keeps us grounded in department meetings when our collective sense of humor side tracks us. Jessica is an integral part of what we do in the Clinical Department. He is a Dr. of Chiropractic in Great Britain, and worked in 2 highly successful clinics in the North of England prior to moving the US.

John grew up on Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. Like many “Yorkshire lads” football (soccer) was his life. He played for a number of teams including high school, college, and university and for a local town team. He served and LDS mission to Scotland, which he claims changed his perspective on life and led him to re think his future career options. John wanted to interact with people from all walks of life. This goal led him to a Bachelors of Science degree in chiropractic from the University of Glamorgan, South Wales. He holds professional memberships in the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) and the European Academy of Chiropractic (EAC).

John moved to Southern Utah in January 2008 and fell in love with the rugged mountains and desert landscape, which is such a contrast to his homeland. He loves his family life and spends much of his free time with his wife and children exploring his new surroundings.

John really enjoys the students and Diamond Ranch Academy. He said there is never a dull moment and he learns from them all of the time. He feels Diamond Ranch Academy gives him an opportunity to assist with the health aspect of their care while hopefully providing an example to aid them in both current and future ventures.

What John’s supervisor Jan B. says about him:
John is our “token Brit.”, having moved his family from Southport, England only 18months ago. Have you noticed how some of the students (and staff) have become adept at speaking “English” over the past months?

Having a doctoral degree in chiropractic in England, John will be taking board exams in the U.S. of A. sometime within this next year. We are already mourning the fact that, as much as he loves us, he may eventually move on to further his career!

John is mild mannered (like Clark Kent) but bold, as he loves nothing better than flying down a snow packed mountain on a snow board, or maneuvering a soccer ball through a field of half-crazed competitors.

Betsy Kimber Spotlight

Betsy Kimber is one of our Staff Supervisors. She is a transplant to Hurricane, Utah from Arkansas. Betsy was born in Oregon, and raised in Arkansas. She attended Pulaski Academy, where she graduated high school with a 4.0 grade point average. She received an academic scholarship to Creighton University in Nebraska. She met her husband Cody there in the spring of 2005, and was married in the Jordan River Temple. Cody persuaded her to move to Southern Utah to finish her degree. Betsy finished her degree at Dixie State College. She has a double major, in English and Psychology and graduated Suma Cum Laude. Betsy is hoping to be accepted in the University of Utah’s Psychology Education masters program when she is finished here. Betsy said when she grows up she wants to be a counselor. She is getting great experience at Diamond Ranch Academy.

Betsy loves to go wake boarding, 4-wheeling, and play basketball. She has traveled all over the world. She has been to countries such as, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, and 49 of the 50 states. She hasn’t been to Alaska. Another really unique thing about Betsy is she is a member of the Color Country Antique Machinery Association (CCAMA). The what? Yes I said, the CCAMA. It is a group of individuals who have perfectly restored antique tractors. They travel to fairs, and events to show off their tractors. Betsy and her husband are the proud owners of a 1950 Oliver tractor. They are excited to be a part of this fun and distinctive association.

Betsy is a blue/white on the color code system. She is a good listener and has reasonable expectations of the girls at Diamond Ranch Academy. She has earned their respect, while showing them respect in return.

Melanie Fox the Night Time Assistant Program Director said the following about Betsy: Betsy is one of our newer staff and has quickly filled the position of staff supervisor. She works hard and is very efficient in the work she does. She is always looking for ideas to make Diamond Ranch the premier youth residential treatment center. Betsy goes above and beyond her call of duty because she truly cares about her job and about the students. I can tell by watching her interactions with the students that she wants the best for them in the program and in life. I feel very blessed to be able to work with Betsy.

Cody Wardle had the following director’s comments: Betsy is awesome. She came to Diamond Ranch Academy with a lot of personal experience and education. Since coming to Diamond Ranch Academy she has been kind and warm and has quickly found a way into the girl’s hearts. Betsy is a great example of the Universal Truth “what goes around comes around”. She is teaching the girls that it is important to do what is right even when no one is watching because it comes back to you. We are glad that she is part of the Diamond Ranch Academy Family.

Cody Fonnesbeck Spotlight

Cody Fonnesbeck traded in the illustrious career of selling cars in Colorado to come and work for Diamond Ranch Academy, teaching the life skills class. Cody has been with Diamond Ranch for just over a year. He is currently our Special Education teacher and has done an amazing job with the kids. It’s obvious selling cars gives you the experience to be cunning and creative in convincing the students they can excel farther than they think.

Cody has lived most of his life in St. George Utah. After completing his Bachelors degree in Communications, and making a small fortune selling cars, he decided to move back to his roots. He, his wife Annie, and son Crew, moved here to become a part of the Diamond Ranch Academy family. He has loved working with the Special Education classes. Cody said “if the students get it right in one place, they usually get it right in the other”. Meaning, once the students excel academically, or in a sport, or emotionally, usually the other aspects of their lives start to fall into place. Cody loves seeing that transition.

Cody helps out with Diamond Ranch Academy’s football team. He brings his own talent to help our athletes. Cody held the national record for the 40 yard dash while he was in high school. The staff joke with the boys about this to help motivate them to run faster. Cody also played football in high school. In his spare time, he loves to play all sports, and watch them. He also loves spending time with his family, whether it be shopping, or just hanging out at home. Cody has also served an LDS mission in London, England

Cody’s personality colors are red/blue and a little white. He calls himself an American Flag. His patriotic attitude has helped the students accomplish their tasks quickly and efficiently, yet shows compassion and understanding. He is also very innovative in teaching new study skills.

Reeve Knighton, Cody’s supervisor had the following comments: Cody has been a great addition to the education department and a phenomenal help to special education. He is diligent in the tasks that are delegated to him. In our meetings together, we discuss ways to better serve the students. He is quick to implement any new strategies that will benefit the students in their academics. He is a very capable individual and has a natural ability at building positive relationships with his students. We are lucky to have him on board with us!

Tayleigh Hann Spotlight

Tayleigh Hann has been with Diamond Ranch Academy for 3 years. She has worked her way up to the Daytime Assistant Program Director over the girls’ campus. Her supervisor Cody Wardle has been very impressed with her work. He wrote the following words about her: Tayleigh has a very kind way of working with the girls. In her time at Diamond Ranch Academy she has come to be known as someone who is very fair and consistent. She has also been able to reach girls, which others have not been able to. She provides calm and understanding leadership. She is someone that is easily admired and is often a featured speaker at graduations. I am glad that Tayleigh is so consistent with the students. She has always maintained a professional caring boundary with the students. This has allowed her to be a very effective and valuable employee.

Tayleigh came to us from Palmer, Alaska. She attended Brigham Young University/Idaho where she received her Bachelors degree in communication. In between those years, she served an LDS Spanish speaking mission in California.

Tayleigh loves sports! She is the girls’ softball coach, and plays as well. She also enjoys volleyball, hiking, racquetball, and hanging out around a campfire. Tayleigh is a yellow personality color, which makes her fun to be around. The girls love her because she makes the job fun and is not easily stressed. One of her strengths is that she is excellent at resolving conflicts. Diamond Ranch Academy benefits from having a person like Tayleigh working with them.

Jodie Frandsen Employee Spotlight!!

Jodie Frandsen is Diamond Ranch Academy’s science teacher. Not only is she our science teacher, she brings with her a great knowledge and understanding of biology, chemistry and physiology. She studied at Southern Utah University where she received a Bachelors degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry. While attending school, Jodie worked as a teacher assistant for the microbiology, and biology classes. She excelled in her academics and was on the Dean’s list for her exceptional grades.

Jodie has nine years of experience working with youth. She put herself through school by working at other residential treatment centers, coached youth basketball for four years, and at one time was an Assistant Program Director. She also has experience in taking youth on wilderness treks, and geological hiking excursions.

Jodie is originally from Kanab, Utah and moved to Hurricane after attending Southern Utah University. In her free time she loves water sports, boating, hiking in the outdoors, and watching football. One unique thing about Jodie is she loves spinach. Maybe that is where she gets the strength to motivate and hold our students up to such high standards. She also loves reptiles, which is perfect for anyone who has seen the size of snakes that cross the Diamond Ranch Academy campus. Most importantly, Jodie is a mother to her 10 year old daughter, Kayla.

Jodie enjoys working at Diamond Ranch Academy because of the integrity of the program. She feels the owners are genuinely concerned about the youth and they truly live up to their motto. She particularly enjoys working in the private school setting because she can become more involved with the students academic success. Jodie is a core red/yellow personality. Her drive to succeed personally trickles down to the students. Jodie expects her students to excel and holds them accountable for achieving their academic goals. She places a high emphasis on education and has motivated the students to not only obtain their high school diplomas, but to continue on to college and beyond.

Bo Iverson, Jodie’s supervisor, wrote the following comments about Jodie:

Finding certified science teachers is hard enough, let alone one as great as Jodie. Jodie worked at a few different treatment centers while she was working her way through college and earning her teaching degree. She has a great understanding of residential treatment and how behavior influences academic achievement. She is tireless in her efforts to motivate students and discovering ways to help them reach their academic potential. Everyday I find myself thinking how fortunate we are to have Jodie working with the students of DRA on a daily basis. Thanks Jodie, for choosing to make a difference.

Kade Mathews Employee Spotlight

Kade Mathews is Diamond Ranch Academy’s Assistant Clinical Director. He has broken his nose 4 times in his life, maybe it was while clay sculpting, it’s a pretty dangerous hobby.

Kade obtained his bachelors degree from Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University). He then studied at the University of Utah to receive his Masters in Social Work. Kade said he never imagined himself going that far in school, but his is so happy he did. He loves working with families, and the students. His areas of expertise range from trauma, adolescents, drug and alcohol, and play therapy. Kade enjoys Diamond Ranch Academy for it’s team approach, and loves his co-workers.

His supervisor, Ephraim Hanks, added the following comments about Kade: Kade has been with the ranch for 3 years and is the Assistant Clinical Director. He is very dedicated and reliable. His gifts include his ability to make anyone feel comfortable and his sense of humor. Kade is a yellow and knows how to have fun. Kade is loved by his students. I appreciate Kade’s work ethic and attention to detail. “We’re lucky to have you Kade!”

Karma Lund Employee Spotlight

Karma Lund is a true veteran to the nursing profession. She just hit her one year mark at DRA, but has “years and years” of nursing experience. Karma attended school at Washington State University, where she obtained an LPN. Since then, she has held many jobs throughout the western United States. She has experience in hospitals, home health care, clinics, offices, and public health care. Years ago, while living in Wayne County, Utah, Karma was the only medical professional for miles. She delivered babies, sutured lacerations, worked as the school nurse, and used her home as an office! She was even in charge of the ambulance, which, at that time, was little more than a glorified station wagon.

Karma has proved to have had enough experience to feel confident in her abilities. She is a take charge type of person, which comes from her 50/50 red blue personality. She is an excellent diagnostician for the students who see her.

Personally, Karma is the mother of 7 children, 27 grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren. What a great heritage! She was born in Ephraim, Utah and has lived in many places, such as Utah, Missouri, California, and Arizona, during her lifetime. Karma lived her early married years in Washington where she raised her children. The untimely death of her husband left her to support her family on her own. Her children rave about her, saying she is a wonderful mother who worked hard to support and care for them.

Karma loves to crochet blankets, read, work in the yard, and take her two poodles on walks. She especially has lots of fun with her great grandchildren. She moved to Southern Utah because of the weather, and has been here for the last 10 years. Karma has especially enjoyed working at DRA because of the students. She is thrilled to see kids change from sick, to well adjusted, happy individuals. She said she will never tire of seeing it.

Her supervisor, Jan Bills, wrote the following comments about Karma:

Karma lives up to her primary color in that she is “true blue” in terms of loyalty and dependability. She has never been tardy and she has always been willing to go the extra mile, whether in terms of added job tasks or staying late on the spur of the moment. You will never hear her complain.

Karma brings such a broad history of nursing experience that she can offer insight into diabetes, allergies, STDs, wound care, skin conditions, ear complaints, and digestive issues. She is also responsible for taking care of our lab work and ordering supplies.

Caring, kind, and motivated to “jump right in” and take care the problem, Karma is also willing to receive direction and accept 100% accountability. I can’t think of a more ideal team player. Her personal life is a reflection, as well, of the giving and caring person that she is. She is, simply put, “good Karma!”

Spotlight 4-28-2009

Brittany Wright, is Diamond Ranch Academy’s Purchasing Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant. She is an awesome first contact for new students and parents to meet when they arrive at the ranch. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Brittany’s professional manner and welcoming attitude makes her the perfect fit for our front office.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Brittany was born and raised in Kanab, Utah. A little known fact about Kanab, it is home to the scrapbooking stamps and accessories giant, “Stampin’ Up”. She said, “working at here is like being paid to do something I would volunteer to do.” That is the caliber of employees Diamond Ranch Academy is fortunate to have.

Shaley was raised in North Ogden, Utah. In the 6th grade she took 2nd place in the State Spelling Bee. In high school, she traded those spelling skills for athletics. She played both basketball and volleyball. Shaley still enjoys playing those sports when she gets the chance. Shaley loves to work out and stay in shape and is the type of person who is willing to try anything.

Shaley is one of our newlyweds here on campus. She married Howard Spizenberger on December 26, 2008, in St. Paul Minnesota. Shaley met Howard on the Dixie State College campus, playing ultimate frisbee. Howard literally ran into Shaley while they were playing, and knocked her down. When the game was over, Shaley said, “how about you walk two beautiful ladies home?” Howard made the right decision and escorted her and her friend home. This led to studying together, which quickly led to falling in love.

Shaley is a white/blue personality. She said she is able to stay calm in escalated situations at the ranch, especially working with the girls. If the girls see her staying calm, they are more likely to stay that way themselves. What a great addition to our team!

Cody Wardle is her supervisor; he had the following comments to say about her:
Shaley is a Shift Supervisor at Diamond Ranch Academy and has been very positive in her interactions with the girls. She seems very confident and calm in her approach. At Diamond Ranch Academy we look to hire staff who are proactive, educated, and who are willing to continue to learn. Shaley fits the mold very well. She is someone that has made significant contributions in a seemingly short time. Thanks Shaley for all that you do to help the girls to become better. You’re a great example!

Spotlight 4-21-2009

This weeks spotlight was born in the small town of Thatcher Arizona, moved to Idaho, and raised in St. George, Utah all to become Diamond Ranch Academy’s daytime Assistant Program Director over Stone Ridge. Travis Bentley our “jack of all trades, and master of none”, has proven to be invaluable here at Diamond Ranch Academy. He has a great sense of humor so we can tease him a little.

Travis is one of our “professional students”, he has obtained an Associates in Science from Dixie State College, and is “slowly but surely” completing his Bachelors degree in Psychology from Southern Utah University. He has served a 2 year LDS mission in Oklahoma, where he gained much leadership experience, and has since held many management positions.

Travis has been to all but 6 of the states. He also recently has been involved in helping aspiring musicians get connected with producers. He and his father have spent some time in Nashville working with producers (including LeAnn Rimes and Trick Pony's producers) and various writers and have taken an active part since in helping musicians get noticed and get signed.

Travis also loves sports, especially baseball. He played middle infield in high school. He enjoys hunting and fishing and anything outdoors. He loves to ride his motorcycle and can play the guitar. He has a real love for music.

Travis feels his current position here at Diamond Ranch Academy has been very rewarding. He said he loves helping the youth, and seeing the positive changes they make in their lives. Each day there are new challenges, and there's nothing more rewarding to him than being a part of the kid's lives and seeing the progress each student makes and the confidence they gain when they make positive changes.

Ricky Dias is Travis’s direct supervisor. He wrote the following words about Travis:

Travis has been at diamond ranch academy for quite a while. He has been a HYDS, night time APD and a daytime APD. He is a very fast learner and has excelled in every situation that we have put him in. When you ask Travis to get something done he never complains and has it done before you expected. He has a great sense of humor and brings a lot of laughs to the office. He works great with the youth and has built a great rapport with those that he comes in contact with. I feel very luck to have such an incredible assistant!

We are lucky to have Travis on our team!

Spotlight 4-16-2009

If you hear the sounds of music in the hills of Hurricane, Utah you can only guess it is from our amazing music teacher at Diamond Ranch Academy, Geoff Meyers, who is willing and proud to share his gift of music with the students who attend there.

Geoff Meyers was born and raised in Long Island, New York. One unique thing about Geoff, he has an identical twin bother that lives in Northern Utah. You can tell the difference between the two of them if you asked his brother to play a music piece; he won’t be able to, as he focused his learning toward computers. From the beginning Geoff was exposed to all types of culture. He has had to opportunity to see many different entertainers and artists perform live, attend the Radio City Music Hall, and even played in its broadcasting studio.

His education began at Brigham Young University, where he obtained a bachelors degree in Music, he then traveled east to pursue a Masters degree in Music at Notre Dame, and finally ended up on the west coast at Stanford for a doctoral studies. We are very fortunate to have such a well versed music teacher in our midst.

While attending Stanford, Geoff met his wife Connie, of 20 years. Together they have two children, a girl, 17, and boy, 11. They moved to St. George originally with the idea they would just “house sit” for Connie’s parents, and here they have stayed 16 years later. Before coming to Diamond Ranch Academy, Geoff worked as a music teacher at Redrock School, and at the Trinity Lutheran School. He is still the organist for the School. He is an adjunct professor at Dixie State College where he teaches the organ. He has also taught at Southern Utah University.

In his spare time, Geoff enjoys playing the organ, keyboard, and computer music. He loves to ride his bike and swim. He enjoys putting on monthly recitals at the Tabernacle, and during Christmas time he plays for nearly 40 to 45 separate events. He is a blue/white personality which makes him an amazing music performer. He appears humble and then attacks his piece of music, surprising the audiences. He is an outgoing person who makes friends easily. Geoff enjoys working at Diamond Ranch Academy to help young people have what often times might be there first exposure to different styles of music. He loves to help teenagers become interested in all sorts of music. He believes in teams, which makes him a great fit for our team here at Diamond Ranch Academy.

Bo Iverson is Geoff’s direct supervisor; he had the following comments to make about him:

Mr. Meyers has been a great addition to the Diamond Ranch Academy team. It is always great to find someone that has a passion as great as Mr. Meyer's does for teaching what he loves. His tremendous musical talent and variety of teaching experience has made him a great fit for Diamond Ranch Academy. We are fortunate to have such a great talent and individual working with our students on a daily basis.

Diamond Ranch Academy Employee Spotlight 4-14-2009

Nathan Meng is the newest addition to Diamond Ranch Academy’s therapy team. He and his family moved here from Mississippi, where he was doing an internship at the University of Southern Mississippi. Before moving to Mississippi, Nathan began his educational career at Brigham Young University/Idaho, and completed his bachelor’s degree at the Utah State University in Psychology and Business. He continued on to Seattle Pacific University to study Marriage and Family Therapy and there obtained a Masters degree in that field. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Nathan’s specialty is working with adolescents, as well as conducting premarital counseling and marriage counseling. He was attracted to Diamond Ranch Academy because of the chance to work with adolescents as well as the positive atmosphere and down to earth employees. Nathan is a joker, and a tease by nature, and felt he would fit in with the others.

Nathan was born and raised in Rigby, Idaho. He has been married to his wife Leah for 10 years. The two met at Utah State University where they both danced for the Ballroom dance team. They are the parents of three children, two boys, and one girl, ages 8, 5, and almost 2. Nathan enjoys the outdoors, hiking, camping, and working out in the yard. He is a real handyman, (look out Kelby, you may have some competition) and loves to garden. He is real down to earth person who works very hard at everything he does. He enjoys serving others and gives of himself freely.

Nathan and his family felt strongly that Diamond Ranch Academy was the place for him to work and associate with the good people here. They have been exposed to Hurricane, Utah for a little more than a week. We hope they enjoy all Hurricane has to offer, such as the new Panda Buffet, the Coral Cliffs Cinema, and we can’t forget Ted and Allens.

Congratulations to our Diamond Ranch Academy Staff!!!

McKel A and Ephraim H added a boy to each of their families.
